How do I use the Computed Component?

Modified on Thu, 10 Oct at 8:56 AM

The Computed Component is one of the most powerful tools in Droplet, acting a bit like a formula in a spreadsheet.  It allows you to write formulas that can either surface information to the user in real time or run behind the scenes to support advanced workflows, automations, and calculations.

Whether you’re performing simple calculations like adding two inputs together or complex operations like calculating the number of business days between two dates (excluding weekends and holidays), the Computed Component helps you derive and use new information based on data entered in your form.

When should I use a Computed Component?

The Computed Component is ideal for any situation where you need to calculate, format, or derive additional data from user inputs.

Here are some common use cases:

Automatic Calculations for the User
Use Computed fields to show users the result of a calculation in real-time.

For example, if a form asks for item prices and quantities, you can use a Computed field to calculate and display the total cost automatically as the user fills out the form.
Workflow Routing Based on Complex Conditions
Hide the Computed Component and use its result in the background to help determine workflow routing.

For instance, if a form submission needs to be directed to a particular principal based upon the school selected, you can write a formula to determine this behind the scenes and use it to route the submission as needed.

Features & Configuration

Adding a Computed Component is simple. Select the Computed option from the component library and drag it onto the form.

After placing the component, you can customize its properties in the right-hand panel:

Properties

Label
This text appears above the Computed field and should explain to the user what the field is calculating, if it is visible.
Width
Adjust the width of the component (1-12 columns) based on your form layout.

Logic

Display Logic
Control when this component shows or hides based on other inputs.

Pro Tip!
Use simply "false" in the Formula Logic to keep this Computed component hidden at all times.  Great for those behind-the-scenes-only cases.

Formula Logic
Use the Formula Logic button in the Properties panel to enter an expression that runs the computation.  Formulas can be as simple as adding two numbers or as complex as referencing datasets or performing multi-step operations.

Details

Placeholder Text
Provide text that displays in the field until the formula runs and returns a result (if the field is visible).
Hint
Add helpful guidance or context to explain the calculation or formula, appearing under the component.
Tooltip
A tooltip will appear when users hover over the question mark icon next to the component, offering additional details about the calculation.
Name
Set a more descriptive internal name for the component to make it easier to identify in your data exports.
ID
Each Droplet component has a unique ID that can be referenced in formulas, workflows, or visibility settings. Edit the default ID to make it more meaningful and easy to reference in your formulas or calculations.
